WSIB Releases Benefits Policy Review Consultation Final Report

The WSIB has released the final report of Jim Thomas, the independent chair appointed by the WSIB to conduct its Benefits Policy Review. The goal of the Benefits Policy Review was to look at WSIB policy in four important areas, consult with stakeholders and make recommendations for improvement.

The review looked at the following areas:

  • Recurrences

  • Aggravation basis

  • Permanent impairments

  • Work disruptions

The report makes a number of recommendations in each of these policy areas. The report also makes some general recommendations about what policies should do and what they should contain.

Significantly, the report found that the current policies do not adequately describe how claims should be decided when there was a pre-existing condition. To address this issue, it recommends the creation of an entirely new pre-existing conditions policy.

The WSIB has stated it will release draft policies in the four areas addressed by the report in the fall. Consultations with stakeholders on the draft policies will then take place.
